The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Nsikak Kingsley, for allegedly beating his 65-year-old father, Adone Peter, to death during a domestic altercation in Akure.
The incident, which occurred in Oda Community, Akure South Local Government Area of the state, has sparked concern among residents.
According to the police, a disagreement between the suspect and his father on May 28 allegedly escalated into a violent confrontation, during which the elderly man sustained severe injuries, particularly to the head.
The victim was rushed to a medical facility for treatment but was later confirmed dead by doctors.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the case was reported to the police by Daniel Moses, a son of the deceased and brother to the suspect.
He explained that detectives immediately launched an investigation and arrested the suspect for questioning.
“The deceased’s remains have been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,” the police spokesman said.
Jimoh added that the suspect would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the alleged act, describing it as unfortunate and contrary to societal values.
He assured residents that the command would ensure justice is served and warned against resorting to violence in resolving disputes.
The police commissioner also urged members of the public to embrace peaceful means of settling disagreements and to promptly report criminal activities and security threats to law enforcement agencies.
