NiMet Trains Agricultural Extension Professionals on Climate Risk Management

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) have started a 10-day Training of Trainers workshop on Climate Risk Management in Agricultural Extension
(CRMAE).

The workshop, which runs from July 6 to 17 in Abuja, aims to equip agricultural extension workers with the skills to provide farmers with useful climate information. This will help promote resilient and sustainable farming across Nigeria.

The training is part of an AGRA project designed to strengthen digital climate advisory services and build stronger agricultural systems in Africa.

Lead facilitator from the Stockholm Environment Institute, Dr Tufa Dinku emphasised the importance of the CRMAE curriculum. He noted that NiMet, under the leadership of Prof. Charles Anosike, would lead its full rollout in Nigeria.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Charles Anosike said climate change and extreme weather events continue to threaten agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods.

He added that NiMet is committed to providing weather and climate services that support planning, early warning, and decision-making in agriculture and other weather-sensitive sectors.

Prof. Anosike described extension officers as the vital link between climate science and on-farm decisions about planting, crop choice, water and soil management, inputs, and disaster preparedness.

He urged participants to share their experiences, build networks, and pass on the knowledge to extension platforms, farmer groups, cooperatives, and rural communities across the country.
