Opay says a notice circulating online claiming that it will suspend transactions and account-related services from September 1, 2026, is false.
The notice was posted as an “Official Note from Opay Digital Services Limited” by GeneralShow on X.
“Dear Valued Customers, we appreciate your trust and support in Opay,” the notice reads.
“This is to officially inform you that starting from 1st September, 2026, Opay will go on a long indefinite break.
“During this period, we will not be attending to any transactions or account related services until further notice.
“We sincerely advise all customers to remove their funds from their Opay accounts as soon as possible to avoid any inconvenience. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for being a part of the Opay community.”
However, Opay, in a statement posted on its verified social media platforms on Sunday, denied the report, describing it as “false”.
“This is FALSE! OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company said.
“True OPay users know how to identify our official communications. Take a closer look at the viral post and you’ll spot the red flags.
“Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates.”
Maxwell Loko, OPay’s vice-president of public and government affairs, also described the viral publication as “false, malicious and misleading”.
Speaking with Techeconomy, Loko said OPay is not shutting down and cautioned customers against withdrawing or transferring their funds based on the fabricated message.
The fintech advised customers to rely on its verified communication channels for information about its operations and services.
The OPay executive also warned that deliberately spreading false information capable of causing panic or eroding confidence in a financial institution could attract legal consequences.
