NIGERIA, INDIA COMMIT TO STRENGTHENING TRADE AND ECONOMIC TIES

Vice President Kashim Shettima has met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, with both countries pledging to deepen trade and investment across key economic sectors.

The areas of cooperation include oil and gas, renewable and clean energy, defence, power, technology, healthcare and capacity building.

Prime Minister Modi thanked Nigeria for peacefully hosting and protecting about 80,000 Indians living in the country, while urging the resumption of crude oil purchases from Nigeria to boost bilateral trade.

He noted that trade between the two countries had declined from about 14 billion dollars annually to approximately 9 billion dollars in recent years.

In response, Vice President Shettima promised to look into the request, while highlighting areas of strategic importance to Nigeria, including pharmaceuticals, defence, the creative industry and digital technology.

He said President Bola Tinubu is committed to developing these sectors through foreign investment and strategic partnerships, with the aim of creating opportunities and improving the livelihoods of millions of Nigerian youths.
