SULTAN URGES POLITICIANS TO PRIORITISE PEACE & UNITY AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Sultan made the call when he received the Presidential Candidate and Vice Presidential Candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, respectively, at his palace in Sokoto.
A statement by Prince Bashir Adefaka, on behalf of the Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto says the visit was part of the delegation’s political engagements and consultations with traditional and community leaders, and came two weeks after the visit of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, led by its Director-General, Senator Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari.
The statement urges politicians to avoid abusive language, insults and inflammatory statements, warning that such conduct could heighten tensions and potentially lead to violence.
It adds that political actors have the constitutional and democratic right to present their manifestos, programmes and ideas to the electorate, but should do so with decorum and within the provisions of the law.
The Sultan also enjoined political leaders to place the interests, unity, peace and stability of Nigeria above individual political differences, stressing that political positions are temporary.
Earlier, Peter Obi thanked the Sultan for receiving the delegation, describing the visit as part of their broader political engagement and consultations with traditional and community leaders.
