The Nigeria Customs Service has made clarifications at an investigative hearing of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts that the ₦62.2 billion classified as under-remittance by Customs in 2017 was the total levies it collected on behalf of other agencies, which are not for remittance to the Federation Account.
The clarification was in response to an audit query by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, which dates back to 2019.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, explained further that most levies are remitted to the Federation Account, except those on local production of wheat, textiles, and wines, among others.
The management of Customs is to meet soon with a sub-committee to reconcile all issues erroneously captured in the audit report.
