WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME SEEKS $89 MILLION AS FUNDING CRISIS THREATENS HUMANITARIAN OPERATIONS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) says funding challenges are severely affecting its humanitarian support operations in northern Nigeria.

The UN agency says it requires 89 million dollars over the next six months to sustain food and nutrition assistance as well as logistics operations across the country.

WFP Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Kinday Samba, says funding shortfalls have significantly reduced the organisation's capacity to provide assistance, even as the number of food-insecure people has risen to 6.2 million.

According to him, the WFP is currently able to support only 740,000 people, down from 1.3 million at the peak of the 2025 lean season.

He warns that the funding gap has left about 5.5 million people, including many children, without access to lifesaving food and nutrition support.
