NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE OPERATIONALIZES NEW MAXIMUM SECURITY CUSTODIAL CENTRE IN IBADAN
The Nigerian Correctional Service has commenced operations at the newly completed Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Olojuoro-Olomi, in Ibadan, Oyo State, with the admission of 80 convicted male inmates.
A statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji indicates that the facility was operationalized following approval by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a directive by the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche.
The Centre currently has capacity for 800 inmates, with plans to expand to 3,000 upon completion of additional sections for awaiting-trial inmates, female inmates and persons on death row.
It further says the facility is equipped with modern custodial cells, medical facilities, a kitchen, administrative offices, staff accommodation and enhanced security infrastructure.
Strategically located in the South-West, the Centre is expected to ease pressure on existing custodial facilities, particularly in neighbouring Ogun, Osun and Ekiti States.
The Nigerian Correctional Service says the phased activation will allow the facility to progressively deploy its full capacity, while supporting the Service’s mandate of humane custody, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration.
