OLOKERETE IS GONE! OKERETE MOURNS ANOTHER TRADITIONAL LEADER
The historic border community of Okerete, under Saki, loses its second Olokerete following the demise of Chief Wahab Gbobamu, who rose from honorary chief to Baale of Okerete.
OKERETE, SAKI, OYO STATE — The historic community of Okerete, a border town under Saki in Oyo State, has reportedly lost another holder of the traditional title of Olokerete, marking a sad moment in the history of the community.
Located approximately 90 kilometres from Saki towards the Benin Republic, Okerete is a border community with a distinctive historical and traditional identity. Its connection to Saki remains an important part of its traditional heritage and place within the wider Oke-Ogun region.
THE ROYAL HISTORY OF OL O KERETE
According to the historical account provided, Okerete was granted royal status by the then Okere of Saki, His Royal Majesty, Oba Tijani Abimbola Aremu Ado Oyedokun III.
This royal recognition marked an important development in the traditional history of Okerete, giving the community a recognised traditional leadership structure and a place in the heritage associated with the Okere traditional institution.
The title of Olokerete subsequently became part of the community's traditional identity, representing a link between its people, their history and the traditional authority under which the community developed.
CHIEF WAHAB GBOBAMU: FROM HONORARY CHIEF TO BAALE OF OKERETE
The history of the Olokerete title also recalls the traditional journey of Chief Wahab Gbobamu, who rose from the position of an honorary chief to become the Baale of Okerete.
His progression through the traditional hierarchy represents a significant chapter in the community's leadership history. His emergence as Baale illustrates how traditional titles and leadership positions have contributed to the development of Okerete's local identity.
Following Chief Wahab Gbobamu's demise, the passing of another Olokerete marks the second such loss in the succession recalled in this historical account.
A MOMENT FOR REFLECTION AND HISTORICAL PRESERVATION
The demise of Olokerete is not merely the loss of an individual; it is also an occasion to reflect on the history of a community whose traditional identity is closely connected to Saki.
For Okerete, the passing of its traditional leaders underscores the importance of documenting the names, reigns, achievements and historical circumstances of those who have occupied its traditional positions.
Preserving these accounts will help younger generations understand the origins of their community, appreciate its relationship with the Okere traditional institution and recognise the individuals who contributed to its development.
As Okerete mourns, the memories of its departed traditional leaders remain part of the community's historical heritage.
Olokerete is gone, but the history of Okerete and the legacies of its traditional leaders deserve to be preserved for generations yet unborn.
May the departed rest in peace, and may the people of Okerete find the strength to bear this loss.
