Oyo 2027: Uphold Party Integrity, Reject Media Speculation ~ Dr. Adewale Kolapo Kareem (AKK).
My attention has been drawn to recent reports circulating in some sections of the media suggesting the emergence of certain individuals as "consensus candidates" for various governorship seats across the federation, including our dear Oyo State. Indeed, I recognise the vibrancy of our media space, but it is imperative to note that fanning the embers of such speculation at this stage only serves to create unnecessary discord within the progressive fold. In the buildup of the road to 2027, we must distinguish between strategic political narratives and the actual constitutional processes of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Our focus must remain on strengthening the party’s structures rather than entertaining premature conclusions that do not reflect the current realities on the ground.
I am fully aware that in the theater of politics, various interest groups often deploy "mind games" and seemingly sophisticated apparatuses to project specific names into the national talking points. While these are age-old tactics, leadership is far too serious a business to be reduced to mere optics or backdoor orchestrations. Governance must be intentional, and the emergence of a flag bearer must be a reflection of the genuine will and wide acceptance of the party faithful. We must move away from the era of "engineered consensus" and embrace a culture where merit, vision, and a proven track record are the primary yardsticks for leadership. The people of Oyo State deserve a process that is transparent and a candidate who truly resonates with their aspirations.
I have consistently maintained in my previous communications that no member or interest group should engage in activities that preempt discord or trigger an internal crisis within our ranks. All party faithful, regardless of their leanings, must subscribe to the established democratic means and procedures provided by the APC constitution. We are a party rooted in the ideals of strong democratic principles. We are a party that puts a premium on peace, unity, and progress, nothing less. Any attempt to bypass these codes through the backdoor is not only an affront to the founding fathers of our party but a disservice to the millions of Nigerians who look to the APC for a solution that is instituted on fairness and equity.
It should also be clear that if the party, in its wisdom and through a legitimate consultative framework, decides to move toward a consensus arrangement in Oyo State, I am firm in my conviction that the APC will find in me the most suitable candidate. My record as a researcher, academic and a patriot, my outstanding resume in the private sector, and the "Realistic Tomorrow" vision I have painstakingly articulated for our state speak for themselves. Beyond the numbers, I offer a leadership rooted in good conscience and a deep-seated commitment to the public good. If consensus is to be based on competence, integrity, and the ability to win the general election against the incumbent in disarray, then my candidacy is the most viable path to victory.
I urge all fellow progressives to remain observant and resilient against any attempt to sow seeds of rancour or confusion. We must not allow ourselves to be distracted by speculative headlines designed to favour those pushing it alone. I have absolute and unwavering trust in the leadership of the APC in Oyo State, led by Otunba Moses Alake Adeyemo, to guide this party through a peaceful, rancour-free, and highly fair decision-making process. I am confident that our leadership will prioritise the collective interest of the party above all else, and ensure that our eventual gubernatorial flag bearer emerges through a process that is beyond reproach, ultimately, by God's grace, leading us to the Agodi Government House in 2027.
