The defending champions, Super Falcons, have crashed out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to rivals Cameroon on Sunday.
The quarter-final clash in Casablanca, Morocco, marked the 14th WAFCON meeting between the two nations, with Nigeria historically holding the advantage. The defending champions had recorded nine victories in regulation time and two more through penalty shoot-outs, while the Indomitable Lionesses had managed just one win and one draw against the Super Falcons.

Myriam Maéva Nyadjou’s 19th-minute strike proved decisive in the WAFCON 2026 quarter-final, giving Cameroon the breakthrough they needed to secure victory. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was equally crucial, making eight saves as Nigeria pushed relentlessly for an equaliser but failed to find a way through.
With the victory, Cameroon advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face tournament hosts Morocco, who secured their place in the last four after defeating South Africa in another quarter-final clash on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the defeat ended Nigeria’s bid to retain their WAFCON title and dashed their hopes of securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
